Program Commonalities

Community leadership development programs are designed for rising decision-makers. They prepare them for the challenges of their own life-long leadership journeys while increasing their awareness of the rich opportunities for leadership in their communities.

Programs have been developed to meet leadership needs within their own communities, but they share the following characteristics:

• They are cross-sectoral in nature - seeking participants from business, government and the
   social profit sectors;

• They seek to reflect the diverse makeup of their communities within each program year;

• They offer a six to ten month program that includes some or all of the following:

           2 Off-site workshops (between 1 and 2.5 days in length);

           Leadership Development Days (monthly for between 6 and 8 months);
           Class Team Projects (carried out during the program year);

           A Community Leadership Network (local and national);
           Mentoring or coaching.

The programs focus on key leadership competencies that include some or all of the following:

• Understanding leadership;

• Understanding oneself as a Leader (Myers Briggs, 360 Leadership Assessment Tool,
  Learning Styles);

• Practical tools for leadership (Emotional Intelligence, Systems Thinking, Understanding
